Some basic strategies for mapping the Expanded Trade Wars Universe:
1) Stardock location--if the SysOp has the Stardock visible, you
can simply press V and know if you have been to this universe
before. If you have come through a fixed wormhole, then you
also know which universe this is. If you came through a random
wormhole, and you have never seen a Stardock in that sector before
then it is a new universe for you. Write down the location of the
Stardock, and any time you see a fixed wormhole to a universe to
which you haven't travelled knowingly, go through it. Eventually
you will have visited all of the universes, and have a good idea
of how to get from one to another. Remember, though, to always
record all info, including wormhole location, because not every
SysOp will put wormholes in every universe which lead to every
other universe. For instance, you might be able to get to universe
5 from universes 1, 2, 4, 7, and 12, but not from 3, 6, 8, 9, 10,
and 11. Which is the case on a certain board of which I have
intimate knowledge (Mine!!).
2) Sector 8 Warps--If the Stardock is not visible, it is a little
tougher! The best way my users have found is to pick a sector
in FedSpace (so you can always get to it) and plot it's warps.
We use sector 8 just because it is convenient, and not as
predictable as sector 1. Basically, all the tactics from the
Stardock mapping technique are used, but instead of the location
of the Stardock, you keep track of the warps out of sector 8 (or
any sector you decide, as long as it is consistent throughout
all the universes) and anytime you switch universes check to see
what the warps are out of that sector. If it is unknown, you
haven't been here before, and will need to travel there to map
it out. Otherwise, it isn't any different.
Ok, so there are two techniques for keeping track of which universe you are
currently in...but what about the mapping utilities, like TWVIEW? That is
actually pretty easy also, just keep a different data file for each universe.
Using TWVIEW as an example, it creates a file called (for my board) DANTE.DAT.
With the multiple universes, call them DANTE1.DAT, DANTE2.DAT, DANTE3.DAT, etc.
If you don't yet know which universe it is, then you can call them something
like DANTEA.DAT, DANTEB.DAT, DANTEC.DAT, or if the Stardock is shown, you can
use that in the name, as such: DANTE234.DAT, DANTE915.DAT, etc...
The important thing is just to keep track of which unknown data file goes with
which set of notes! Good record keeping is essential in this task.
